General Map Usage

Expand data layers: On the Data Pane, click the name of a data layer to expand the full list of entries.
Zoom to feature: Click an entry in the expanded layer list in the Data Pane to zoom to that feature.
Turn layers on/off: On the Data Pane, click the icon for a data layer to turn it on or off (does not apply to the “Countries” layer)
Select a feature: Click any cable system line, landing point dot, data center icon or country to display a list of information related to that feature. Once a feature is selected, a window will appear in the Information Pane below the Data Pane displaying information relevant to the selected feature.
Clear selection: Click “Clear” in the Information Pane in the bottom left under the layers list to clear the selection.

If a feature is clicked that overlaps with other features, (1 of X) will be displayed in the top left corner of the Information Pane with X equal to the number of features that overlap the selection. Use the arrow icons next to “Clear” to navigate between features and find the one you wish to view.
Zoom to: In the Information Pane, click Zoom to in order to center fit the full selected feature
Clear Selected: In the Information Pane, click “Clear Selected” to clear the selected features
Submit an update: If you would like to submit an update to the cable map, click “Submit an update” in the center of the map header which will open an email link to the STF Analytics staff.

Control Buttons

Top Left Corner of the Map

Zoom Slider

Click the zoom slider button Zoom Widget - Web Map Features to zoom in or out on the map. You may also use your mouse wheel to zoom in and out.

Home

The Home Button widget Home Widget - Web Map Features is automatically enabled when the app starts. Clicking the widget resets the map extent to the map’s initial extent.

My Location

When the application starts, the My Location MyLocation Widget - Web Map Features widget is automatically enabled to access your physical location. Clicking the widget zooms the map to your current location. Clicking the widget again stops the location function.

You must allow the app permission to access your location through the pop up that appears in your browser.

Top Right Corner of the Map

Overview

Use this widget to quickly pan to parts of the map.

  1. Click the expansion arrow OverviewArrow - Web Map Features to expand or fold the widget.
  2. When expanded, click the maximize icon OverviewExpand - Web Map Features to temporarily maximize the overview map for quick access to faraway areas of interest.
  3. To exit the temporary view, click the maximize icon OverviewExpand - Web Map Features again or drag the gray rectangle to your destination and release.

Bottom Left Corner of the Map

Coordinates

Click the Enable clicking the map to get coordinates button Coordinate - Web Map Features to enable clicking the map to get coordinates. You can add a point to the map, highlight the coordinates, and make a copy of the coordinates.

Scalebar

When the app starts, the Scalebar widget is automatically enabled and displayed at the lower left corner of the app. It is updated dynamically when the map’s scale changes.

Tools

Map Legend

When the application starts, the Legend widget Legend Widget - Web Map Features is automatically enabled. Clicking the Legend widget displays the Legend window. Clicking the X in the upper right corner of the Legend window closes it.

About

The About Widget About Widget - Web Map Features gives additional information about the methodology behind this map and information on the map’s sponsor.

Measurement Tool

Click the Measurement widget icon Measurement Widget - Web Map Features to open it.

1. Point Measurements
Click the Point measurement button Measurement Widget Point Measure - Web Map Features and click a point on the map.

The Measurement widget displays the coordinates for the point in degrees (decimal). To change the coordinate display format to degrees/minutes/seconds, change the selection in the Degrees drop-down menu to DMS.

2. Polyline Measurements
a) Click the Polyline measurement button Measurement Widget Polyline Measure - Web Map Features.
b) Draw a polyline on the map by clicking two or more points.
c) Double-click to finish drawing the polyline.

The Measurement widget displays the total length of the polyline using the defined Default Length Unit. To change the length unit, select the applicable unit of measure from the Kilometers drop-down menu.

3. Polygon Measurements
a) Click the Polygon measurement button Measurement Widget Polygon Measure - Web Map Features.
b) Draw a polygon on the map by clicking three or more points.
c) Double-click to finish drawing the polygon.

Select Tool

To clear any selection, you must have the widget open and press the “Clear” button.

The following steps explain how to use the Select widget:

1. Click the Select widget icon SelectTool Widget - Web Map Features to open it.

2. Choose the layer or layers you want by checking the box.

    • You can also make all layers selectable or de-selectable, or toggle layers select ability by clicking the button at the up-right corner of the panel, in line with Layer.

3. Hover over the Select button. You can “Select By Rectangle” with the following actions:

    • Drag the pointer on the map to create a new selection.
    • Press the Shift key while dragging the pointer on the map to add selected features to the selection.
    • Press the Ctrl key while dragging the pointer on the map to remove selected features from the selection.

4. Click Select and draw on the map to select features. If more than one selection tool is configured, click the arrow on Select to choose the tool in the menu.

    • The number of selected features display next to the layer.

5. Click the ellipsis (…) to open the Selection Actions drop-down menu.

    • Click Zoom to in order to center the selected elements and fit them in the map window.
    • Click Pan to in order to center the selected elements in the map window at the current zoom level.
    • Click Flash in order to make the selected element flash on the map.
    • Click Show pop-up to show details on the selected element in the Information Pane.
    • Click Add a marker to add a map marker on the selected element.
    • Click Clear selection to clear the current selection.

6. Click X on the main panel to close the drop-down menu.
7. Alternatively click the number to display the list of features. Click the ellipsis (…) next to the feature to open the selection actions drop-down menu.

9. Click Clear to clear all the selections.

Advanced Tools

Group Filter

1. Click the Group Filter widget GroupFilter Widget - Web Map Features to display a selection of predefined filter sets.

  • Below the gray line divider are an operator and a drop-down list. In this case, the map is filtered to show only cable systems with a Ready for Service date of 2019 or earlier. Click Apply to execute this setting.

2. Click Reset to remove the filter and restore the map to its previous state.

3. The widget has a save option to save these defined criteria settings for future use. Click the settings button GroupFilter Settings - Web Map Features. The widget panel switches to the options panel.

      • Click Save to save the defined criteria locally as a JSON text file.
      • Click Upload a Saved File to load a previously saved file to restore all the criteria defined in the file.
      • If you need to use the filtered map in other widgets, check Persist After Widget is Closed. By default, closing the widget will revert all filters to the map’s initial state.

NOTE: If at any time you notice certain features seem to be hidden or missing, navigate to the Group Filter widget Settings panel and determine if Persist After Widget is Closed is checked. If it is checked, unchecking the box should revert the map to its original state once the widget is closed.

4. List of available queries for this map:

  • Cable Systems by Year – Filter display of cable systems based on RFS date.
  • Cable Systems by Capacity – Filter display of cable systems based on their Design Capacity
  • Cable Systems by Owner – Filter display of cable systems based on their Owner(s)
  • Cable Systems by Supplier – Filter display of cable systems based on their Supplier(s)
  • Cable Systems by Installer – Filter display of cable systems based on their Installer(s)
  • Cable Landings – Search for cable landings
Print

Video tutorial:

1. Click the Print button Print Widget - Web Map Features to open the Print widget.

2. Type a title for the map in the Map title text box.
3. Select the applicable Layout and Format for the exported map. The default layout is A4 Landscape and the default format is PDF

    • Note: The MAP_ONLY format prints only the map, omitting any marginal information from the output.

4. Click Advanced to open a menu with advanced print options.

    • Map scale/extent—Defines the method that the print service uses to calculate the printed extent of the map.
      • Preserving map scale causes the printed map to maintain its scale while recalculating the extent around the existing center point.
      • Preserving map extent causes the scale to adjust to fit the current map extent onto the printed map.
      • You can also force a specific scale by clicking the Force scale option and providing a scale.
      • Click current to populate the value with the present scale of the map.
    • Output spatial reference WKID—Defines the output spatial references of the print by specifying a valid well-known ID (WKID).
    • Layout metadata—Allows you to override the default values set in the configuration.
      • Specify values for the Author and Copyright properties to provide current information to the print service. Check the Include legend check box to display the legend on the printed map.
    • MAP_ONLY size—If the Map_Only format is selected; you can provide dimensions for the Width and Height properties in pixels. Otherwise, these values are ignored.
    • Print quality—Allows you to update the resolution of the printed map.
      • Provide an updated value for the DPI (dots per inch) in the text box.

5. After all options have been set with the applicable values, click Print to submit all information to the print service.

    • A progress bar displays next to the executing task.

    • Upon completion of the print job, a link to the print output displays.

6. Click the file name to open the file in a new window.
7. Click Clear prints to clear the print history.

Share

1. Click the Share widget icon Share Widget - Web Map Features to open it.

2. Copy the short link under Share a link to this app and paste it into your email, instant message, and so on. You can also use the provided buttons to post your app to your Facebook, Twitter, or Google accounts, or in an email.

3. Optionally click Link Options to easily define URL parameters included in the short link. See Use URL parameters.

    • Check the option or check box to add a URL parameter from the following options. You can preview the URL change in the Link preview box.
      • Current map extent—This is used by default.
      • Click the map to define the center of the map with zoom level—A point icon shows under the option when it is checked. Click the icon and click where you want the map to center in the app. A point marker will be added on the map, and the URL in the link preview will be updated accordingly based on the map zoom level.
      • Click the map to define the center of the map with map scale—A point icon shows under the option when it is checked. Click the icon and click where you want the map to center in the app. A point marker will be added on the map, and the URL in the link preview will be updated accordingly based on the map scale.
      • Query a feature and zoom to it—Choose a layer, a field, and a value from the drop-down menus to query a feature and zoom to it.
      • Add a marker on the map—Click the point icon and click where you want to add a marker in the map. Fill in the WKID, Pop-up title, Symbol, and Label properties in each text box.
      • Overwrite default screen size of mobile layout—Input the screen size in pixels. By default, when either the height or width of a screen display is less than 600 pixels, the mobile layout automatically applies.
      • Set display language of the app—Choose a language from the drop-down menu.
      • Remember layers visibility—Respects the layers’ visibility on the current map.
    • Click SelectTool BackButton - Web Map Features to return to the main panel. The short link should be updated to reflect the URL change made in the step above.

4. Under Embed this app in a website, copy the HTML code and paste it into your website. If you want, click Embed Options to choose the size of your app to be embedded.
